You don't need an agency to create packaging that looks professional. You need a clear idea of your brand, a few simple rules and a way to see your design on the real product before you print. Here's the process we recommend.
Step 1: Know who you're designing for
Before colours and fonts, answer three questions:
- Who is your customer? A student grabbing coffee and a bride ordering favours want different things.
- How should they feel? Playful, calm, luxurious, rustic, bold?
- Where will they see it? On a shelf, in a hand, in a delivery box, on Instagram?
Write the answers down. Every design decision should support them.
Step 2: Pick two or three brand colours
Fewer colours look more confident. Choose one main colour, one accent and a neutral such as white, cream or kraft brown. Make sure your logo stands out clearly against the background colour.
Step 3: Make your logo the hero
On packaging, simple wins. Give your logo plenty of space and make it large enough to recognise from a few steps away. If your packaging is small, like a sticker or a cup, use just the logo and maybe one short line.
Step 4: Use a pattern for personality
A repeating pattern, such as leaves, dots, waves or a simplified version of your logo, makes packaging feel designed and fills large surfaces without clutter. Patterns also look good from every angle, which matters on cups, bags and wrapping.
Step 5: Say less
Packaging is not a brochure. Stick to:
- Your logo
- One short tagline or product name
- Your website or social handle
Everything else can live on a label, a card insert or your website.
Step 6: Think about the unboxing
The inside counts as much as the outside. Printed tissue paper, a thank-you card or a message inside the lid turns opening an order into a moment customers want to share.
Step 7: Check it on the real product
Flat mockups hide problems. Text can wrap around a curve, sit on a fold or disappear into a seam. Always preview your design on the actual shape and size before ordering.
Use AI to get a head start
If you're stuck on a blank page, let AI do the first draft. In the PakGenie studio you pick your product, describe the look you want, for example "a cozy neighbourhood bakery, warm pastels, hand-drawn wheat", and get design concepts in seconds. You can then add your logo, adjust colours and text, or upload finished artwork if you already have it.
Get a proof before you print
However you create your design, approve a proof before production. It's your last chance to catch a typo or a colour issue. Every PakGenie order includes a digital proof to approve before anything is printed.
The short version
Know your customer, keep colours and text simple, make the logo the hero, add a pattern for personality and check everything on the real product. Good packaging isn't about doing more. It's about doing a few things clearly.
